A brand-new competition is coming to the Agria Blenheim Palace International Horse Trials, the Attelage de Tradition.
While this prestigious carriage driving discipline is well established internationally, this marks its debut at Blenheim, bringing a unique blend of heritage, elegance, and horsemanship to the event. The competition will be delivered in partnership with AIAT Great Britain.
What is Attelage de Tradition?
Attelage de Tradition is a traditional carriage driving competition that celebrates the history and craftsmanship of horse-drawn transport.
Beautifully presented, often historic-style carriages are driven by skilled competitors, with judging focused on:
- Authenticity and historical accuracy
- Presentation and turnout of horses, carriage, and driver
- Skill, precision, and harmony in the driving
Rather than speed, the emphasis is on elegance, detail, and tradition, offering a glimpse into how carriage driving would have appeared in the past.
How the Competition Works
This one-day competition consists of two main elements:
- AIAT Presentation Judging
Competitors are assessed on the overall turnout, including the carriage, harness, horses, and driver. Attention to detail and authenticity are key. - Arena Driving Challenges
Following judging, competitors will enter the Palace Arena to complete three driving tasks, demonstrating control, accuracy, and partnership with their horses.
When & Where to Watch
The Attelage de Tradition will take place during the lunchtime break on Sunday 20th September in the lunch break of the CCI 4* Long Final Show Jumping phase in the Palace Arena, making it an easy and exciting addition to your day.
A Spectacle Not to Miss
A highlight of the competition will be a stunning procession through the grounds of Blenheim Palace, giving visitors the chance to see these remarkable carriages in motion in a truly historic setting.
Why You Should Watch
Whether you’re an equestrian enthusiast or simply looking to experience something different, Attelage de Tradition offers a unique blend of sport, history, and spectacle.
With elegant carriages, beautifully turned-out horses, and a celebration of tradition, it’s a must-see addition to this year’s event at Blenheim.
