With the event season in full swing, we are drawing ever closer to the opening day of the Agria Blenheim Palace International Horse Trials, hosting the Agria FEI Eventing European Championship this September, 18 – 21.
Hosting the Championship is no small task, especially while simultaneously delivering a packed week of classes, including the GFS Saddles 8 & 9 year old class and the evoke™ Eventers Challenge. It’s a standout moment in the eventing diary, even without the added prestige of the Europeans.
To get an insight into what is it like to run such a high scale event, we caught up with Event Director Katrina Midgley, who has been working on the horse trials since 2023.
What does your day-to-day life look like in the lead-up to the Agria Blenheim Palace International Horse Trials?
In the lead-up to Blenheim, no two days are the same, which is what I love about it. It’s a mix of site planning, team coordination, sponsor liaison, and ensuring every little detail is moving forward. There’s a lot of behind-the-scenes problem-solving, from infrastructure and logistics to making sure the visitor experience will be seamless. I spend a lot of time with our operations, sales and marketing teams and stakeholders to make sure everyone’s aligned. The days are long but incredibly rewarding.
How does preparation differ now that you’re hosting the Agria FEI Eventing European Championships?
It adds another layer of scale, complexity, and responsibility. It’s an incredible honour for Blenheim, but it means everything – from infrastructure to scheduling to rider facilities – needs to meet international standards. We’re working closely with the FEI and stakeholders to ensure we’re delivering a world-class event. There’s more international coordination, and a real focus on precision and excellence across the board.
What do you find most rewarding about your role as Event Director so far this year?
Seeing the pieces of the puzzle come together is always the most rewarding part. This year, with the added excitement of the European Championships, there’s a real buzz in the air. Bringing together such a dedicated and passionate team to deliver something on this scale is incredibly fulfilling. And knowing that we’re creating something memorable for athletes, spectators, and sponsors alike is what drives me every day.
Have you had any particularly memorable moments from past editions of the Horse Trials?
Too many to count! But a standout has to be seeing the teamwork between our riders, grooms and their horses to achieve a result at Blenheim. I am particularly fond of the 8 & 9 year old class, it’s a proving ground for future stars, and when you see someone come through here and go on to great things, it’s very special. Also, the atmosphere on cross country day, the energy from the crowd, the partnership between horse and rider – it’s truly electric.
Looking back over the past few months, have there been any favourite moments that have stood out to you as you prepare for the horse trials?
Honestly, the first time I saw the site plan it start to take shape – it gave me goosebumps. Also, some of the feedback we’ve had from returning partners and riders has been incredibly motivating. It’s reminded me of how much this event means to the community and how high expectations are, which only fuels our determination to deliver.
What would you say to someone who’s never attended Blenheim before to encourage them to come?
I’d say: come for the horses, stay for the atmosphere. Blenheim offers world-class sport set against the backdrop of a truly iconic venue. It’s more than just a horse trials – it’s a celebration of countryside life, family, food, shopping, and spectacle. Whether you’re a seasoned equestrian fan or just looking for a great day out, there’s something magical here for everyone.
Book your tickets today to come see some thrilling sport, and enjoy a countryside weekend with shopping and entertainment on the side!
